Ever wondered what it’s all about? Alpha is a worldwide phenomenon. It’s found in over 160 countries. It’s run in tens of thousands of churches of all denominations. More than 15 million people have taken this opportunity to explore the meaning of life. Perhaps it’s your turn.

What Is Alpha?

Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha course usually meets once per week for 10 weeks, and includes an amazing one-day or weekend getaway. Each session, people enjoy great food, laughter and learning in a fun and friendly atmosphere where no question about life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile…questions like—Is there a God? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going?

Peace Lutheran Church in Lombard will be holding an introduction dinner starting at 6:15 on Monday September 13th. Just come and enjoy a great dinner, watch an entertaining video and see if you would like to take the alpha course.

Strong second half propels Wheaton South to win over Hinsdale Central

A spirited first half effort by Hinsdale Central left the home team in a tie with top-ranked Wheaton Warrenville South heading into halftime.

The final two quarters played out a little different.

Two long touchdown passes by Reilly O’Toole, coupled with a short TD-run by Matt Rogers, propelled the Tigers to a 28-7 win on opening night of the 2010 high school football season in Hinsdale.

Bloomingdale replaces DARE program

Despite eliminating its DARE program, The Bloomingdale Police Department still plans to have officers in local schools frequently throughout the year.

Chief Frank Giammarese said the new program that began this month will decrease department costs while also increasing interactions between officers and students.

All Around Amusements Carnival offers unlimited rides all weekend for $50, if purchased in advance online or at one of the participating Naperville locations – see www.LastFling.org for listings. Mega Passes may also be purchased at the carnival beginning Friday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m. for $55.

“If your kid is going to ride more than 15 rides, you’re going to want to go with the Mega Pass,” said Bill Eagan, Last Fling Executive Committee member.

Other offers include:

Carnival Deal Day – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, includes unlimited rides for $20.
Special Disabilities Day – 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Sept. 6, allows patrons with disabilities priority, no-wait seating and will ride free of charge for two hours. All participants must have a chaperone and wristbands may be obtained at the volunteer trailer.

Naperville police arrest three in $10 million pot bust

Three people were arrested for operating what police call a highly sophisticated marijuana growing operation in Bolingbrook and Naperville that included more than 7,500 cannabis plants in three locations, Naperville police said Wednesday.

Bail was set at $1 million Tuesday for a 40-year-old Chang Hai Chen, who is accused of cultivating more than 7,500 marijuana plants at three houses he rented — one in Naperville and two in Bolingbrook.

DuPage County seeks to clarify zoning rules

DuPage County zoning officials Thursday evening heard about proposed zoning changes aimed at the arrival of non-traditional occupants in traditional neighborhoods.

The public hearing before the county Zoning Board of Appeals drew about 70 people, including numerous speakers who criticized the proposal, saying it would be unfair to religious groups.

The County Board’s Development Committee worked with staff to draw up the draft revisions, which define places of assembly and add detail to the separately identified religious institutions that seek to locate in unincorporated DuPage. The proposed changes would allow places of assembly in all business, office/retail and industrial zoning districts and forbid them in areas zoned for residential use. A grandfathering clause would place existing churches, mosques, ashrams, lodges and other gathering places in a special overlay district.

Man hit by Metra train in Roselle but lives

A man was injured early this morning when he was hit by a Metra train in west suburban Roselle, police said.

About 1:35 a.m., Roselle police received a call from a Metra engineer of a pedestrian hit by a train at 540 E. Irving Park Rd., according to a Roselle police sergeant. The site is between the Medinah and Roselle stations, said Metra spokesman Tom Miller.

11 injured in I-88 rollover

A total of 11 people were injured — two critically — in a three-vehicle rollover traffic collision on I-88 in Lisle Saturday afternoon.

The accident happened on westbound I-88 near mile-marker 130, near Lisle, about 3:53 p.m., according to an Illinois State Police Tollway District trooper.

According to a preliminary investigation by state police, a black Pontiac lost control, striking a red Chevrolet pickup. The pickup then went from the far left lane three lanes over to the far right lane, where it hit a white Toyota minivan, the trooper said. This caused the minivan to roll over and land on its roof.

Company knocks down house without permit

AURORA — A long-running Aurora construction firm may find itself in hot water with the city for knocking down a house without a permit.

Aurora officials confirmed that Geneva Construction demolished a home the company owned at 100 Aurora Ave., directly north of its office on Route 25. According to the city’s Building and Permits Department, the company did not receive a permit for that demolition, as required by city law.

Funeral home fire does $100,000 in damage

A Bartlett funeral home sustained about $100,000 in damage in a Saturday afternoon fire that appears to have started in the home’s crematory and took crews from six fire departments to extinguish.

The roof andf crematory of the Countryside Funeral Home at 950 South Bartlett Road were damaged in the fire that started at about 12:30 p.m., accordingf to a Bartlett Police Department press release.

Members of the Hanover Park Fire Department, Streamwood Fire Department, Bloomingdale Fire Protection District, Itasca Fire Department, and Pingree Grove & Countryside Fire Protection District responded to the scene to assist the Bartlett Fire Protection District extinguish the fire.
